Smart Redirect & A/B Testing
Route scans by rules, weighted destinations, and safety checks.
Smart Redirect lets a managed QR choose from multiple destinations after scan time. Use it when one printed QR needs rules such as weighted A/B testing, region-specific destinations, or device-specific landing pages.
Where to configure it
You can configure Smart Redirect in two places:
- QR Designer — Open the Redirect Rules tab when creating a new trackable QR (available after you add a destination URL).
- Edit modal on My QR Codes — Edit an existing code and open the Advanced tab. Use the Smart Redirect (Wizard) section.
Enable Smart Redirect, choose a rule type, fill in destinations, and save. New scans use the latest saved rules without changing the printed QR image.
Common rule types
- A/B Test — Split traffic between two destinations with configurable weights (must total 100%).
- Geolocation — Route by country or region codes when your plan includes geo redirect features.
- Device Type — Send mobile and desktop traffic to different URLs.
- Operating System — Route iOS, Android, and other/desktop traffic separately.
- Time-Based — Up to five time slots; the first matching slot wins.
- Language — Route by browser language when supported.
A/B testing workflow
- Create two destinations with clear labels, such as Landing A and Landing B.
- Set weights, for example 50/50 for an even test.
- Run the campaign long enough to collect meaningful scan volume.
- Compare scans and conversions in analytics or downstream tools.
- Shift the winning destination to 100% or remove the losing destination.
Safety checks
Every destination is still subject to SmartQR URL safety checks. Unsupported schemes, private network targets, blocked domains, or high-risk destinations can be rejected, warned, or quarantined even when they are part of a Smart Redirect rule.
Troubleshooting
- Controls are disabled or show Plan Locked: your plan may not include Smart Redirect, or the workspace may be over a plan limit.
- Redirect Rules tab is locked in the designer: add a destination URL on Basic Info first.
- All scans go to fallback: check that each rule has a valid destination and that A/B weights add up to 100%.
- Destination was blocked: review the URL, remove suspicious redirect chains, or contact support if this is a false positive.
